Mediterranean Diet Steps

Changing ones eating habits can be a difficult task. Below you will find 5 steps that will ensure that you get it right.

Step 1: Know the approved foods list: Read the Mediterranean Diet Foods page so you know what to shop for. Also, reference the Mediterranean Diet food pyramid for additional information.

Step 2: Vegetables, Whole Grains, Nuts and Legumes. This should make up the bulk of your diet.

Step 3: Reduce your consumption of red meat and focus on fish and lean source of protein. Protein is a small component of this diet but is still important. Your body needs protein to function and repair itself. When consuming protein one should choose chicken and fish. Red meat is OK but no more than 16oz per week should be consumed.

Step 4: Choose sources of fats carefully. Focus on olive oils and fish. The Mediterranean Diet uses a lot of olive oil and fish to provide your body with heart-healthy fats.

Step 5: Exercise. Part of the Mediterranean Diet lifestyle is exercise or some sort of activity that gets your heart rate up. Some examples are:

  • Take short daily walks
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Get a yoga DVD
  • Wii Games
  • XBox Kinect Games
  • 18 holes of Golf
